100 % equities

All of the capital in developed-market equities, with no bonds, gold or cash. Here it serves as a benchmark: the rest of the portfolios in this section are easier to understand when compared with this one, the portfolio that cushions nothing.

The idea

Keep the return of the equity market, with all of its drawdowns, and add nothing to offset it. It is the simplest allocation to maintain: a single sleeve, nothing to rebalance.

The price of that simplicity is that the portfolio's drawdown is the market's drawdown, in full.

Where it comes from

It has no author: it is what you get when you invest all of your capital in a global equity index fund.

Environments in which it struggles

  • In a long stock market decline: there is no sleeve that slows the fall.
  • With sharp rises in interest rates: companies' future earnings are worth less today and valuations fall.
  • When the money is needed on a specific date: a sharp fall may coincide with the moment you have to sell.

Rentabilidades pasadas no garantizan rentabilidades futuras.
